May 18, 2022

After 38 years of serving north central Pennsylvania, I am embarking on a new journey beginning June 1, 2022, allowing me to take my first steps toward retirement at the end of this calendar year. This timeline allows me to finalize a few local projects that are close to my heart, while simultaneously working in a critical leadership role as co-CEO of Chengdu Wanda UPMC International Hospital in China.

I have been blessed with an amazing Board of Directors, skilled medical staff, talented leadership team, and an inspiring Catholic sponsor – making this transition bittersweet.

In my tenure as president of Susquehanna Health Foundation, it has been a true honor and privilege to witness more than $52 Million raised, right here in north central Pa., making world-class health care a reality. As a donor, you have quite literally changed the landscape of our local health care system.

Your donations built incredible facilities like the Susquehanna Tower, Health Innovation Center, and UPMC Hillman Cancer Centers in Williamsport and Wellsboro. You brought cutting-edge technology to our community like our very first da Vinci Robot and scalp-cooling therapy for chemotherapy patients, giving patients more control of their health than ever before. You’ve kept the doors open for our mission services like The Gatehouse and Nurse-Family Partnership. With your help, we’ve attained our Trauma II designation, expanded emergency departments at every campus, and began renovating and expanding our UPMC Rehabilitation Institute at Williamsport – the list is endless.

Patti Jackson-Gehris will take the role of President of UPMC in North Central Pa. on June 1. She has worked alongside me since 2015, when she fully immersed herself in our community. Patti has proven herself a driven and dynamic leader who can achieve success during the most challenging times. During many conversations, we spoke at length regarding the importance of local philanthropy. She is inspired by the impact of donor contributions and is committed to continuing the enhancement of health care locally. I am excited to bear witness to her journey ahead.

You have given selflessly, abundantly, and for the betterment of your fellow man. I will be forever blessed by the opportunities and challenges you have entrusted to me, and my perpetual prayers will always be for your continued success.

With profound gratitude,

Steven P. Johnson
